In the tradition of Peripatetics, Khayyam refers to God as the Necessary Being. While throughout his writings the existence of the Necessary Being is implied and one does not see an in-depth discussion or endeavor to prove the existence of God, there are numerous references to and brief treatments of the subject matter. Khayyam’s argument for the existence of God is what is traditionally referred to as the cosmological argument. According to this argument, since every event must have at least one cause and the cause itself is an event in need of another cause, we end up either with a Necessary Being who has no cause or an infinite succession of contingent, dependent beings which goes on progression ad infinitum.
